Camp Grady Spruce Challenge Course Philosophy

A “Challenge by Choice” approach to programming has proven to be most effective with the challenge course.  Each participant is encouraged to attempt every activity but is never forced.  Learning by having a fun, positive experience offers a participant the opportunity to try potentially difficult and/or frightening challenges in a caring and supportive environment.

In order to achieve the benefits of the challenge course, the events must be sequenced properly.  A good foundation must be established with non-threatening problems so that the group can become acquainted with one another.  As the group progresses, they can interact on past experiences and incorporate the insights gained from the previous situations.  It is the instructor’s responsibility to facilitate this progressive learning and implementation of skills through safe, appropriate planning and processing.

Ropes Course - Our "self-challenge" ropes course, set in the treetops, is a group of obstacles set 30 feet above the ground.  In order to complete a solo-traverse, each participant must first be securely harnessed onto the belay system.  Moving through the various elements from start to finish requires each person to overcome self-limiting fears.  Only by passing through feelings of doubt and insecurity can one emerge at the end of the course filled with exhilaration and self-satisfaction.

The reward (and the value) of the ropes course experience is a positive change in self image.  Everyone who completes this challenge gains a new sense of pride, self-esteem, and a trust in their own abilities.

Each Challenge Course program is unique, and YMCA Camp Grady Spruce can create the program necessary to reach your group’s goals.  In addition, three existing programs may fit your needs:

Traditional Challenge Course:  Traditional low and high elements with processing after each challenge.

Harness the Power of Teamwork: Teambuilding program which delves into the basics of teamwork – communication, perspective, listening, interaction.  The program is enhanced with an accompanying journal, and includes low and high elements.

Survivor Adventure:  Entire team utilizes each member’s skills to follow a map taking the group on an adventure throughout Camp.  Team challenges are faced along the journey, culminating in a cook-out.
