About our Equestrian Programs

Welcome to our Ranch, where we strive to provide quality equestrian experiences! We have 35 horses and almost 400 acres of land to explore and ride on, including the beautiful shoreline of Possum Kingdom Lake. Come and enjoy a long relaxing trail ride on one of our great friends, or, visit each week to saddle up and learn horsemanship skills with our riding lesson program. We offer different equestrian program for all age groups and ability levels.

2023 Ranch Camp

Ranch Camp is for ages 7-16, who want to learn horsemanship from the hooves up! Campers will be paired with their own horse and will learn how to take care of and ride their horse!

Trail Rides

Our trail rides are a great option for someone who wants to explore some of the best views YMCA Camp Grady Spruce has to offer. Guests will be provided with a horse of their very own and can gain confidence and skills while our staff go through the safety procedures and demonstrate how to control and communicate with your new horse. Saddle up and enjoy a relaxing staff-led walking trail ride through the hills, grasslands and even shorelines of camp!

This is a 2-Hour program that is designed to give any Cowboy or Cowgirl the chance to work with and gain some hands-on experience with a horse of their own! Learn how to groom, saddle and lead your new friend! End your session with the opportunity to learn how to ride in the arena with one of our instructors.

This is a 3-Hour program that will bring a smile to any horse lovers face! Come ready to ride. Learn how to saddle, groom and lead your horse, then enjoy a riding lesson in our arena. Finish the day with a trail ride on your new friend through some of the prettiest trails camp has to offer!

Lunch Trail Ride

This program is perfect for that family or group of friends that want to spend some time together doing something “out of the norm”. It features an afternoon trail ride through some of Camp Grady Spruce’s nicest trails to our remote “Hammock Village” on the shores of Possum Kingdom Lake. Sit back and relax while having a sack lunch or campfire lunch. Finish off the ride with a shoreline and wood trail ride back to the barn.

Private Horseback Riding Lessons

Horseback riding lessons are now being offered at CGS Ranch for beginner-intermediate riders! YMCA Camp Grady Spruce is ready to help you explore your love of horses and take your abilities to the next level! Learn from the ground up with lessons focusing on riding ability as well as a variety of disciplines. Deluxe Trail Rider

This program is perfect for that trail rider who wants to experience a little more of what nature has to offer! Enjoy a relaxing trail ride out to our remote “Hammock Village” primitive camp site to relax and enjoy the wilderness, while our staff cooks up a delicious dinner over the fire! Set up your hammocks for the night, make some treats for your horse and enjoy some smores for desert before you camp out under the stars. Return to the corral the next morning with a sunrise trail ride back along the shores or Possum Kingdom Lake. Doesn’t get any better than this!

Safety is always our number one priority here at YMCA Camp Grady Spruce and CGS Ranch. We are proud to say that we are accredited by the Certified Horsemanship Association, and we work to provide the safest and best equestrian experience possible. Our staff have extensive training in safety practices and techniques when working with horses, as well as trail etiquette and emergency procedures. They also hold certifications as CHA riding instructors and are First Aid/CPR certified.
Any and all persons under the age of 18 are required to wear an ASTM-SEI approved helmet at all times when in the arena, riding, and/or in the vicinity of a horse. Any persons above the age of 18 are required to wear an ASTM-SEI approved helmet while riding only. CGS Ranch provides all helmets.

When preparing for your time with us, please remember:

To arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled time to ensure maximum ride/handling time is gained.
There are no restroom facilities located at the barn. The closest restrooms are located at either of the two dining halls.
There are no pets allowed on CGS property.

What to Bring:

  • Long pants
  • Closed toed shoes that completely encompass the foot (no crocs or sandals)
  • Release & Waiver of Liability
  • Any health documents that may restrict riding ability
  • Form of payment (Check/Cash/Credit Card)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug repellent
